Coming This Fall

This is as close to political as I have ever gotten on the internet but I thought I would jump into the fracas by saying that very few of my hopes and dreams, and none of the ones that ultimately matter, are tied to the outcome of the election. What a sad person I would be if it were the case that I was wringing my hands over which deeply flawed person were to take the oval office.

I don't want to be dismissive of politics or of the very serious implications for this election. To be honest there are some macabre scenes that play out in my imagination with either leading candidate taking the reigns of our country. What I am suggesting is that as a Christian I can argue, debate, disagree, and even when things don't go as I would like (which is guaranteed with these candidates) I can still lay down my head in peace and comfort and with hope for the future

I have been relatively non-anxious about this election cycle which represents some growth for me from previous ones. With my life in God's hands and with my hopes secure in him I have felt very much at peace in these troubled times. My greatest needs and biggest prayer requests are God sized problems and not government sized problems. I simply keep going back to Him for hope and to be reminded that He is sovereign over what may come this fall.

To any Christians who are losing sleep or have anger or frustration building I want to encourage you to let it go. Followers of Christ have an opportunity this fall to debate, vote, argue, and put forth compelling and God honoring ways forward in the midst of our very broken country. And then in the midst of the chaos  and aftermath of the elections we can show remarkable restraint and calm and peace as others lash out, celebrate short-lived earthly victories, or proclaim the end of the world.

The truth is that there is only one person who can usher in the end of the world and at the end of all things both Donald and Hilary will bow their knees to him. I cast my vote for the Lord a long time ago now. Dislike Trump or Hilary as much as you want but neither has been given the power or authority to bring history to a close. To pretend they do is foolishness and reveals some misaligned hopes. Trust and hope in Him who will one day usher in a perfect and just and joyful rule and reign to all the earth.
